“Music is the business” — Sarkodie claps back at ‘proper job’ question

Ghanaian rap icon Sarkodie has sparked a heated online debate after responding firmly to a question that seemed to undermine the music industry as a viable career path.
On April 26, 2026, the award-winning artist took to X to react to being asked: “Apart from music, what business do you do? Like, a proper business?” — a remark that clearly did not resonate with him.
According to Sarkodie, such a question comes across as disparaging, particularly in light of the music industry's substantial global influence and scope.
He emphasized that music is not a sideline or a fallback option, but rather one of the world's largest industries — often more demanding and structured than what people typically consider “proper businesses.”
He further explained that pursuing a career in music is a deliberate business decision, akin to any other investment, which involves risks, planning, and long-term commitment.
However, when approached strategically, it can yield substantial rewards.
