Alan Kyerematen kicks against public funding for $4bn Accra–Kumasi Expressway

Founder and Leader of the United Party, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, has questioned government’s decision to use public funds to finance the proposed $4 billion Accra–Kumasi Expressway.

Speaking at a public lecture in Accra, Mr Kyerematen said the project, which can generate revenue through tolls, should instead be financed by the private sector through models such as Build-Operate-Transfer.

He argued that spending $4 billion of public money on the road could deny Ghana the opportunity to invest in other areas of development.

Mr Kyerematen also called for stronger economic planning, lower borrowing costs and greater private-sector participation to drive investment, industrialisation and job creation.

The government has said it plans to finance the expressway without borrowing, using domestic resources, with President Mahama indicating that $2 billion has already been set aside.
