Education Ministry sets up 3-member committee to probe UTAG claims

The Ministry of Education has established a three-member committee to probe allegations raised by the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), following concerns the association presented at a recent press conference.

The decision comes after UTAG on April 13, 2026, issued a 14-day ultimatum to the government calling for the removal of the Director-General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, and his deputy, Prof. Augustine Ocloo.

In a petition to President John Dramani Mahama, the association accused the GTEC leadership of regulatory overreach, unilateral decision-making, and what it described as a coercive administrative approach.

In a statement, the Ministry said Deputy Minister for Education Clement Apaak chairs the committee. The other members are Professor K.T. Oduro, Technical Advisor to the Ministry of Education, and Professor Mahama Duweijua, Board Chairman of GTEC.

The Ministry said the committee has been tasked to investigate the allegations and submit recommendations to help address the concerns raised by UTAG. It further appealed for cooperation from all stakeholders as the committee begins its work, stressing the importance of dialogue in resolving outstanding issues in the tertiary education sector.

“The Ministry wishes to appeal to all parties concerned to extend their full cooperation to the committee as it undertakes this important assignment,” the statement said.

It added that the government remains committed to constructive engagement with stakeholders to ensure stability and continued progress within Ghana’s tertiary education system.
