Ghanaian victim of xenophobic attacks in South Africa returns home safely

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed in a statement that a Ghanaian national who was reportedly targeted in xenophobic attacks in South Africa has returned home safely.

The Ministry announced the arrival of Mr Emmanuel Akowuah Asamoah, describing his return as a successful evacuation effort coordinated by Ghanaian authorities.

The statement from the Ministry read, "We are delighted to welcome back home from South Africa our dear compatriot, Mr Emmanuel Akowuah Asamoah."

According to the Ministry, Mr Asamoah's evacuation was facilitated under the auspices of Ghana's High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Quarshie, following the attacks.

Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, commended the High Commissioner for his role in ensuring the safe return of the victim, stating,

"I commend our High Commissioner to South Africa, His Excellency Benjamin Quarshie, for accompanying our brother all the way." The Foreign Ministry assured Ghanaians living abroad of government's commitment to their safety, particularly in times of distress, emphasizing that any Ghanaian facing threats abroad and seeking to return home can do so with the support of the government.

The Ministry noted, "As we have already announced, Ghanaians who wish to be relocated back home should contact our High Commission to be assisted at the Government of Ghana's expense."

The Foreign Ministry stressed that the government remains committed to protecting the welfare of its citizens, regardless of their location, adding,

"The Mahama administration values every Ghanaian life anywhere in the world, and we shall never abandon our citizens in distress. Your welfare remains our utmost priority."
