IGP deploys special investigators to probe death of UCC student

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has assigned a specialized team of experienced investigators and intelligence officers to the Central Region.

The team's primary objective is to reinforce ongoing police operations and support investigations into the death of a University of Cape Coast (UCC) student.

The Ghana Police Service's broader operational response includes this deployment, ensuring a thorough and coordinated investigation into the incident.

The team will collaborate closely with regional command structures to strengthen fact-finding efforts and provide additional technical and intelligence support to investigators on the ground, according to the Police Service. The deployment follows the discovery of a Level 200 student's body at Hutchland Beach on Friday morning.

The deceased was identified as Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, whose identity was confirmed after the police alerted the university following the discovery of the body.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Ms Avinu, who resided in a private hostel at Amamoma, was last seen on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at approximately 7:00 p.m.

Her roommate reportedly informed investigators that Ms Avinu received a phone call, left their room dressed in casual clothing, and did not return.

The circumstances surrounding her disappearance and subsequent death remain under investigation.
