Mahama nominates five-member Fiscal Council to strengthen financial oversight

President John Dramani Mahama has nominated five exceptional individuals for appointment as members of the Fiscal Council, as required by the Public Financial Management (Amendment) Act, 2025 (Act 1136).

The nominations were officially announced in a statement signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, dated Wednesday, April 8, 2026.

The Fiscal Council is established to reinforce fiscal discipline, enhance oversight, and promote sound decision-making in public financial management.

The nominees comprise Dr. Emmanuel Oteng Kumah as Chairperson, Prof. Patrick Opoku Asuming representing academia, and Leslie Dwight Mensah as a representative from a research think tank.

Moreover, J. Kweku Bedu-Addo, a former public policy expert from the Ministry of Finance, and Dr. Henry Akpenamawu Kofi Wampah, a former public policy expert from the Bank of Ghana, have also been nominated.

The Fiscal Council is expected to play a critical role in ensuring fiscal prudence, advising on economic policy, and strengthening transparency in the management of public finances.

The formation of the Council underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining strong financial governance structures as part of broader economic management efforts.
