Mahama orders immediate release of GHS300m for flood response

President John Dramani Mahama has directed the immediate release of GHS300 million from the Contingency Fund to support flood relief efforts and reinforce measures to prevent future flooding following heavy rains that inundated parts of Accra and other southern communities.

The Presidency announced on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, that the funds will be split equally, with GHS150 million allocated for emergency relief for affected individuals and communities, while the remaining GHS150 million will be utilized to finance flood mitigation projects aimed at reducing the impact of future floods.

The intervention forms part of the government's response to widespread flooding caused by unusually heavy rainfall in parts of the country.

The President has also ordered the deployment of personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service to support the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other security agencies in ongoing rescue and relief operations.

Earlier on Tuesday, Mr. Mahama conducted an aerial assessment of the flooded areas to evaluate the extent of the damage.

According to the Presidency, the President also announced a series of measures aimed at protecting residents and preventing further flooding as the government intensifies its response to the disaster.
