Man fined after hiding Indian hemp in meal for inmate at Teshie Police Station

An Accra Circuit Court has imposed a fine on Derrick Ayiku, also known as "Allegation," a driver's mate, for concealing Indian hemp in food intended for an inmate at the Teshie Police Station.

Ayiku pleaded guilty to unlawful possession or control of narcotic drugs. Consequently, the court convicted him on his own plea and imposed a fine of GHC2,400, with the alternative of serving three months in prison in default of payment.

Chief Inspector Wisdom Alorwu, the prosecutor, informed the court that the complainant was a Police Officer stationed at Teshie in Accra.

He stated that on April 11, 2026, at approximately 2000 hours, while the complainant was on duty as the Station NCO, Ayiku arrived at the Police Station to deliver food to an inmate on remand.

According to the prosecution, the complainant became suspicious of Ayiku's body language and conducted a thorough search of the food.

The search revealed five wraps of Indian hemp concealed in the meal. Ayiku was immediately arrested and detained.

During the investigation, Ayiku reportedly told the Police that one Gideon Amartey had instructed him to purchase the Indian hemp on his behalf.

He admitted to concealing the narcotic substance in the food but failed to disclose the source of the drugs.

The alleged narcotic substance is yet to be sent to the Police Forensic Laboratory for examination as investigations continue.
