Man jailed 2 years for illegal firearm possession, awaits robbery trial

The Ofaakor Circuit Court, presided over by Her Ladyship Nana Asantewaa Atakorah, has sentenced Michael Ayitey, a 30-year-old man, to a two-year prison term for possessing a firearm without lawful authority. After entering a guilty plea, the accused was handed down the sentence by the court.

According to the police, Michael Ayitey was arrested by the Awutu Bawjiase District Police Command, led by ASP Godwin Nornoo.

The investigation revealed that on April 30, 2026, the suspect allegedly attacked a woman with a gun and attempted to rob her before being stopped by residents who intervened and rescued the victim.

The police subsequently arrested the suspect and charged him with two counts: possession of a firearm without authority and robbery. While Ayitey pleaded guilty to the firearm possession charge, he denied the robbery allegation.

The court sentenced him to two years' imprisonment on the firearm charge, with the robbery case proceedings adjourned until May 27, 2026.
