Mobile money vendor kills alleged robber after GH¢140,000 robbery attempt at Lashibi

A suspected armed robber was fatally shot following a botched robbery attempt on a mobile money vendor in Lashibi, Greater Accra Region, according to a statement from the Ghana Police Service, signed by Chief Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs.

The incident occurred on Friday, July 3, 2026, when two armed men on a motorbike allegedly attacked the vendor, who was driving home from work with GH¢140,000 in cash.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects fired at the complainant's vehicle, damaging the right rear tyre and front windscreen.

After snatching a bag containing GH¢140,000, the suspects attempted to flee on their motorbike but were confronted by the complainant, who fired at them, resulting in the death of one suspect at the scene.

The second suspect, however, managed to escape and abandoned the stolen cash, which was subsequently recovered by the police. Authorities said the complainant did not sustain any injuries during the incident.

A search conducted on the deceased suspect led to the recovery of an AK-47 assault rifle, two magazines loaded with 55 rounds of ammunition, an additional 11 rounds of live ammunition, GH¢3,000 in cash, a Samsung mobile phone and an identification card bearing the name Innocent Elemuwa Akachukeu, aged 46.

Investigators also recovered five spent AK-47 shells and two spent pistol shells from the scene.

The body of the deceased suspect has been deposited at the Police Hospital mortuary for preservation, identification and autopsy.

The Accra Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service has since taken over investigations and has launched a manhunt for the second suspect.

The Police have appealed to the public to assist with information that could lead to the arrest of the fleeing suspect.

“The Accra Regional Police Command assures the public of its commitment to combating violent crime and urges anyone with information that may assist in the arrest of the fleeing suspect to report to the nearest Police Station or contact the Police through the emergency numbers 18555 or 191,” the statement added.
