NRSA reports nearly 10% decline in road crash deaths in March

According to provisional data from the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Ghana has seen a decrease in road crashes and fatalities in March 2026, marking a modest improvement in road safety outcomes.

Ghana Investment Report The authority reported that crash cases decreased from 1,218 in March 2025 to 1,195 in March 2026. Fatalities decreased more sharply from 254 to 229, while pedestrian knockdowns declined slightly from 202 to 199.

The Authority attributed the decline to intensified public education campaigns carried out ahead of and during the Easter period.

"We cannot afford to wait until Easter or Christmas before intensifying road safety education. Statistics show that when we engage the public proactively, lives are spared," said Director-General Abraham Amaliba.

Despite the improvement, the Authority warned that road traffic crashes remain a major challenge, causing deaths, injuries, and economic losses.

It called for sustained investment in public education, urging government, development partners, and corporate Ghana to support nationwide campaigns aimed at promoting safer road behaviour.

The Authority said it would expand outreach to schools, workplaces, and transport hubs, while leveraging digital and community-based platforms to reach wider audiences.
