Seven teachers apprehended over BECE malpractice offences

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has confirmed that seven teachers have been arrested for various examination malpractice offenses during the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

The arrests were made possible through WAEC's surveillance systems and information provided by whistleblowers.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Monday evening, Mr. John K. Kapi, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC's National Office, revealed that three of the teachers were apprehended in the Central Region, two in the Bono Region, and two in the Ashanti Region.

Mr. Kapi further disclosed that some of the teachers brought mobile phones into the examination halls.

Investigations showed that some solved questions using external platforms, others input questions into AI tools like ChatGPT, while some captured images of the examination papers.

He noted that the suspects have been handed over to various police stations for further investigation.

Mr. Kapi also praised whistleblowers for helping to uncover the malpractice.

He added that the Council has implemented measures to ensure the prompt distribution of question papers and answer booklets to all examination centres.

He called on all stakeholders to stay alert in order to prevent examination malpractice.

Despite some challenges at a few centres, Mr. Kapi noted that overall, “today’s examination has gone well.”
