Two suspects arrested as police intercepts over 20,000 rounds of ammunition

Law enforcement officials in the Oti Region have intercepted a cargo truck carrying over 20,000 rounds of ammunition and arrested two individuals in connection with the suspected unauthorized transport.

The vehicle, a MAN truck with registration number GW 9927–13, was stopped at the Nkwanta Breweniase barrier on the Eastern Corridor during a routine check. It was en route from Accra Tema Station to Damanko in the Nkwanta North District.

A search of the truck revealed a substantial quantity of ammunition and a foreign-made firearm. The seized items included 7,000 AA cartridges, 3,000 BB rounds, and 1,124 rounds of AK 47 ammunition, among others, totaling over 20,000 rounds.

The driver, Kende Richard, 26, and his mate, Latif Adam, 20, are currently in custody and assisting the police with their investigation.

The Nkwanta South Police Command is collaborating with investigators to determine the source of the ammunition, its intended destination, and whether a larger network is involved.

The seizure occurs amidst heightened security measures in the Nkwanta area due to concerns about recurring violence and instability.

Police assert that the increased checks aim to prevent the movement of weapons and prevent further tensions or criminal activity.
