UE/R: Police apprehend 27-year-old man for possession of assault rifle in Bawku

The Ghana Police Service in the Upper East Region has taken a suspect into custody for unlawful possession of an assault rifle in Bawku.

Abdul Basit, aged 27, was apprehended on April 13, 2026, at Sakabo, a suburb of Bawku, by a military patrol team during an operation in the area.

According to the police, the patrol team responded to gunshots and pursued the suspect, who was seen fleeing into a room.

A search of the room yielded an AK-47 assault rifle with 31 rounds of ammunition. Police stated that the suspect acknowledged ownership of the weapon during questioning.

He is currently in custody, assisting with investigations and is expected to be arraigned in court.
