Ghana Boxing Set for New Era as GBA Announces 2026 Elections

The Ghana boxing fraternity is on the cusp of a major turning point, as the Ghana Boxing Interim Management Committee (GBIMC) has officially announced the 2026 Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) elections.

A formal notice issued by GBIMC Chairman Samir Captan on May 11, 2026, confirmed that an Extraordinary Congress will take place on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at the Accra Sports Stadium to elect a substantive Executive Board for the Ghana Boxing Authority.

For many within the boxing community, this announcement represents more than just another election — it embodies hope for stability, fresh leadership, and renewed direction for a sport that has produced some of Ghana's greatest sporting heroes.

From trainers working tirelessly in community gyms to young amateur boxers chasing dreams of becoming the next Azumah Nelson or Ike Quartey, many believe the upcoming elections could shape the future of boxing development in the country.

The positions up for election include President, 1st Vice President, 2nd Vice President, Treasurer, and four Executive Board Member slots. Aspirants are expected to pick up nomination forms from Thursday, May 14, with submissions closing on Tuesday, May 19, 2026.

Around the boxing circles in Accra, Bukom, Jamestown, and other boxing communities, conversations have already intensified as stakeholders begin to weigh potential candidates capable of restoring confidence and unity within the sport.

Some gym owners and coaches say the next administration must prioritize grassroots boxing, improve welfare for fighters, and attract sponsorship opportunities to revive local promotions.

“This election is very important for the future of Ghana boxing,” one boxing trainer at Bukom told reporters after the announcement. “The young boys in the gyms need opportunities, support, and proper leadership. Boxing has changed many lives in this country.”

The GBIMC also stressed that only members and associations in good standing — fully registered, licensed, and not in arrears — will be eligible to vote during the congress.

The Interim Management Committee further assured stakeholders that clear election guidelines and modalities will accompany the nomination process to ensure transparency and credibility.

With boxing deeply rooted in many Ghanaian communities, expectations are already high that the June elections will usher in leaders capable of restoring the sport’s glory and creating opportunities for the next generation of fighters.
