Referee Omar Artan given hero’s welcome in Somalia after US entry blocked

Renowned Somali referee Omar Artan has been accorded a hero's welcome in Mogadishu upon his return from the United States, where he was denied entry, thereby temporarily halting his ambition to make history at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Artan, 34, had been chosen by FIFA as one of the referees for the esteemed tournament, becoming the first Somali referee to take on an on-field role at football's biggest global event. His selection was widely celebrated across Somalia and seen as a major milestone for the country's sporting community.

Artan had traveled to Miami to attend FIFA's mandatory pre-tournament referees' seminar, a key preparation camp designed for all match officials selected for the World Cup. Despite holding a diplomatic passport and a valid single-entry US visa, he was reportedly denied entry upon arrival by US immigration authorities.

Artan underwent several hours of questioning before officials cited 'vetting concerns' and placed him on a return flight to Somalia. The decision has generated disappointment among football fans and sports stakeholders in Somalia and across Africa, who viewed his participation as a historic achievement for the nation.

However, the setback has not diminished the admiration Somalis have for the accomplished referee.

Hundreds of supporters, football officials, and well-wishers gathered in Mogadishu to welcome him home, celebrating his remarkable journey and contributions to the sport.

Artan’s rise through the ranks of international football has been nothing short of inspirational. Since becoming a FIFA-accredited referee in 2018, he has consistently broken barriers for Somali football. In 2024, he became the first Somali referee to officiate at the Africa Cup of Nations, earning widespread praise for his performances. His achievements were further recognized when he was named the Confederation of African Football’s Best Male Referee.
