We’re not paying Black Stars coach Carlos Queiroz $100,000 – Kofi Adams

The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, has denied reports that the newly appointed head coach of the Black Stars, Carlos Queiroz, will receive a monthly salary of $100,000.

Although speculation had suggested that the Ghana Football Association had agreed to this figure for the Portuguese trainer, the Minister maintains that the actual amount is lower. He indicated that the exact salary will be made public once the contractual details are fully concluded.

In a statement on Asempa FM, the Minister explained that the urgency of the appointment was driven by the proximity of the FIFA World Cup.

"We needed a coach who is ready to take the team, as the World Cup is just around the corner. Regardless of nationality, the coach must be prepared," he said. He added that the agreement in principle is for a short-term deal tied to the tournament.

"The condition we agreed upon was a short-term contract, lasting a maximum of four months, for the duration of the World Cup. The coach's performance will determine any further agreement."

Addressing the salary again, he maintained that the reported figure is inaccurate. 

“We are not paying him $100,000. We are not paying him up to that amount at all,” he stressed, noting that discussions are still ongoing and the final terms have not yet been signed off. 

Queiroz was officially unveiled last week after arriving in Ghana on Wednesday, April 22. The Portuguese manager recently monitored the Black Galaxies in camp as he looks to call-up a few local-based players to join the team for upcoming friendlies against Mexico and Wales.

He is currently embarking on an European tour to engage players abroad.
